Recovery on record – West Lothian man recovering from alcohol problems turns songwriter to help Centre which transformed his life

From Johnny Cash to Amy Winehouse, alcoholism and the spiral down into addiction is a recurring theme amongst musicians. But one person from Blackburn , West Lothian , hopes the music he wrote as part of his recovery will now help the service which turned his life around.

Joseph Boyle started drinking heavily a decade ago following the death of his wife. At his lowest point he was consuming three bottles of wine a day. His drinking was so severe that it began to damage the cells in his brain, and Joseph lost movement in his lower body and started to suffer from memory problems. After several admissions to hospital because of his heavy drinking, Joseph was diagnosed with Alcohol Related Brain Damage (ARBD) in 2014.

After his diagnosis Joseph was one of the first people to be referred to Penumbra Milestone, an alcohol-free 10-bed step-down unit in Edinburgh which provides short-term care for vulnerable men and women who have a diagnosis of ARBD.

After 12 weeks of abstinence and support at Milestone, Joseph travelled back home to receive further recovery-focused support in the community. He now returns regularly to Milestone, this time as a volunteer to help other people who have been diagnosed with ARBD.

Speaking about Moonstone and his own recovery, Joseph said:

Singing and playing music as part of the music group at Milestone helped me regain coordination and improve my memory, and it introduced me to the power of music. The group was a big part of my recovery.

Song-writing has been a release for me. It has helped me tackle the demons which caused my problem drinking in the first place. I think you can hear that in the record. It charts my spiral downwards, the bouts of depression and the mood swings, and finally the story of my recovery.

I'm really grateful to everyone at Milestone for the support I received. Without it I don't know where I'd be. I go back to Milestone fairly regularly now to help out the music group that helped me so much. I'm hoping this album will allow me to give a bit more back.”

The 15-track album is on sale through the website bandcamp for £5, although people can choose to pay more if they wish. All pro ceeds from the sales will go to the mental health charity Penumbra, which runs Penumbra Milestone in partnership with NHS Lothian, City of Edinburgh Council , Midlothian Council, East Lothian Council and West Lothian Council.

The album takes its name from the Moonstone gemstone, a symbol of hope. The songs fall into three parts - Spirals, Trauma and Recovery - and reflect a common path of addiction and (hopefully) recovery.

The songs were recorded at Penumbra Milestone by Dr Matthew Hicks and Penumbra Recovery Worker Kyle Cuthbert, with bonus tracks being recorded at Purple Orange in Bathgate.

The Milestone music group – which includes staff and people receiving support - also feature on the record. Some of the instruments used by the group were purchased through funding from the Edinburgh & Lothian Health Foundation.

Moonstone can be streamed on Bandcamp - https://Josephboyle.bandcamp.com/releases

Aberdeen Gaelic arts festival revitalised

Fèis Obar Dheathain is looking forward to its first main fèis in several years, which is due to be held in the city next month.

The last fèis, which offers tuition in music, song and drama to children and young people around Aberdeen, was held over eight years ago. A new committee – made up of volunteers – was set-up in January 2016 to re-establish the festival and has already held two separate workshops in the past twelve months.

Fèis organiser Anne Thirkell said that one of the most important elements of the fèis is that it gives children a chance to hear and speak Gaelic outside the classroom while also giving children with little or no Gaelic the opportunity to  engage in the language in a relaxed setting.

Next month's fèis, on the 11 th - 13 th  February, will offer three days packed full of music tuition, song and drama for children and young people aged 3-18. Older participants (aged 8-18) will receive tuition in a range of choices from whistle to step-dancing, delivered by top-class tutors. As well as that, the Fèis Bheag (Wee Fèis) for children aged 5-7 and the Fèis Bheag Bhìodhach (Tiny Fèis) for 3-5 year olds will offer songs, games and taster music sessions for younger children. All events will take place at Cults Academy.

The fèis is open to all children and young adults, irrespective of their Gaelic language and musical ability.

Arthur Cormack, Chief Executive of Fèisean nan Gàidheal, which supports the fèis said: “It is a delight to see Fèis Obar Dheathain rejuvenated. The work it did previously, which will continue in February, confirms the interest in Gaelic language and culture that exists among young people in Aberdeen, and their parents.  The fèis will increase the knowledge of those enroled in Gaelic medium education in the city, as well as offering other young people the opportunity to experience the culture for the first time.”

Please contact  feisobardheathain@feisean.org  for more information on the range of choices on offer and to receive booking forms.

WILLIE AND THE BANDITS

Saturday Feb. 25 th – Sneaky Petes, Edinburgh
Sunday Feb. 26 th – Mad Hatters, Inverness
Wednesday Mar 1st – The Lemon Tree, Aberdeen

“These boys can groove and sing like whiskey angels and it doesn't take long to realise why they belong on the festival circuit.” -Glastonbury festival

“Love the soul in their music” – Bob Harris

“Wille is a superb slide player, I love what these guys are doing” – Joe Bonamassa

Essentially Wille and the Bandits is a classic blues rock three piece much in the vain of Cream or The Jimi Hendrix experience. But in a similar way to how these bands pushed the genre in their time, Wille and the Bandits try to take their sound beyond what is expected of such a traditional line up.
The use of more bizarre instrumentation and eclectic influences in the song writing often pushes them more into a world music or progressive category. Having toured with artists such as Deep Purple through to the John Butler trio and played major festivals across Europe, the band seem to leave an equally astounding impression on audiences of all ages and musical backgrounds with their energetic and soulful performances.
They have received great critical acclaim, being voted in the top ten must see bands at Glastonbury 2014 by BBC Radio 1 and reaching number 2 in the UK blues chart with their first single on downloads alone.
The band are praised in the press for their albums; bursting at the seams with textures, originality and soul. Rock legends such as Ian Paice, Joe Bonamassa and Francis Rossi have also praised the band's musicianship and their unique edge to Rock and Blues.

Tickets go on sale Friday at 10 am from www.fatsoma.com/TwentyTen

JOHN LEWIS UK TOUR

Welsh Rockabilly hero to play his way from

Land's End to John O'Groats.

Welsh Rockabilly hero John Lewis' hits the road next month on a full UK tour that will see him play in venues all over the country.

He will perform in a solo capacity with just his electrifying guitar skills, commanding voice and stomping foot for accompaniment, to help promote and showcase his first ‘Solo Acoustic' album ‘His Other Side' which will be officially released on 27 th February .

John's Rock'n'Roll calibre and credentials are very well established and respected in the ‘Rocking Scene' around the world where he has performed at major festivals from Moscow, Russia to Melbourne, Australia. This solo tour will, however, allow music lovers the opportunity to see him perform in a much more stripped down and intimate environment.

During his early years with Welsh Rockabilly legends The Rimshots he recorded several albums and won a 'British Country Music Award - Album of the Year'. He also fronts Johnny Bach and the Moonshine Boozers , with former Imelda May guitarist Darrel Higham . Imelda has been a great champion of his for years, regularly inviting him to open shows for her and recently contributed her harmony backing vocals to the single ‘Waltz Around The Kitchen' . Further endorsements come from BBC 6 Music DJ's Tom Robinson, Steve Lamacq BBC Radio Wales' Adam Walton and music legends from Wanda Jackson to Van Morrison. He's even done session work for D&B DJ High Contrast

With his distinctive talents and authentic conviction, he injects an urgent energy into the traditions of American roots music, rock'n'roll, country and rockabilly while keeping the original spirit alive and as exciting as ever in a tour de force performance not to be missed.

LILYGUN ALBUM SALE NOW ON!
Get Lilygun's debut album on sale now!
This album has sold out in shops so this is the only place where Cds are available.

Visit the Shop here: http://www.lilygun.com/ shop
and get your copy while it's on sale now!

Here's what they said about it...

“There have been many debut albums that bring you that "wow" factor and Lilygun is right up there with the best. The songs are atmospheric, played brilliantly but above all sung to perfection by front woman Anna-Christina. Lilygun are getting the attention and recognition from the music industry for all their qualities and hard work. About bloody time too”.
Neil Richardson. Roomthirteen

"Escaping the genre trap with consummate ease, Lilygun's self-titled debut deals in freedom of expression and a feast of guitar-driven emotion dredged from the depths of London's underground live music scene. Impossible to pigeon-hole and yet easy to admire, Lilygun could be the shot in the arm British rock is searching for".
Gun-Ho. Rush On Rock

"What's most striking about the album from Lilygun is how they've combined a real sense of catchiness with their technical approach to things, combining their signature sound with an almost mainstream like quality, something which will stand them out as more than a simple rock band. This ability, and the resulting sound is what makes this such a stand out album, and one which I have a feeling is going to do remarkably well once it's in the public domain from the 10th of September. If you only ever listen to one album we review, then make it this one – believe me when I say it's worth your while!"
Dave Nicholls. Loud-Stuff

“Few bands in recent memory have grabbed my attention like London rockers Lilygun. There is so much depth to this record. It's dark and cerebral, it's moody and pensive, it's operatic and it rocks balls. Musically, there is an evident solid chemistry with gorgeous bass lines by Aaron John and David Ryder Prangley and drummer Belle Star laying down the foundation for massive orchestral highs and magnificently simple lows. Add to this a deliciously balanced mix of guitar sounds, ranging from haunting background growls to full bore wall-o'-sound solos. Then there is the tour-de-force that IS Anna-Christina. With song writing chops that, for me, rival those of the great Tori Amos, she is certain to be a force to be reckoned with. This is not to mention the fact that she is one of the most gorgeous bad-ass rocker women I've ever seen”.
Kevin. Nanobot Rock Reviews

“This is a set of songs written by the band's dynamic and charismatic singer, Anna-Christina, demonstrating such variety that it's difficult to pin the sound down to 1 genre. The arrangements squeeze every last drop out of a fairly traditional line-up and create a huge dynamic range across the album. This is a great first album from an original and inventive band and I haven't heard anything else this year to surpass this in terms of raw power and dynamic range; they've been on the horizon for a while now and this should be the breakthrough. This is a great album”.
Allan McKay. Music Riot

“Anna-Christina's voice is both unique and unexpected. The album only hints at the intensity this band could create live; it's a tease, a promise of better things, an album that will leave you on the hunt for tickets to see them play live. Lilygun know how to lead their listeners, drawing them intimately close before hitting them hard with a punk riff or two. Lilygun's debut album is an insight into just what they can do, varied and exciting, it clearly sets them up as one to watch.”
Keller. EGL Magazine

"This band is going places, no doubt about it and I strongly suggest that radio stations and festival organisers start checking them out now! The band deliver 8 tracks of Rock music that brims with attitude and melody."
Dave. Ravenheart Music
